Venetian Fortress of  Day Trip

Koules is the name of the sea fortress that dominates the port of Heraklion and is one of the most important sights of the city that when viewed from above resembles the face of a horse.

It was built by the Venetians to protect the city from invaders and the landings of other conquerors and is located at the entrance of the Venetian port. The Venetian Castello gave it its final form in the period 1523-1540, replacing an older fortress that was destroyed by earthquakes and other phenomena.

Once you reach Koule you can walk it to take pictures between the boats and the sea. Once you reach the fortress you have the opportunity to visit its interior and be guided as it functions as a “museum” where you will see various weapons of the old era, cells, cannons, perfect architecture and admire the city of Heraklion through the castle walls.

It is important to mention that Heraklion is one of the most historic cities in Greece. When it was built, it offered a solution to the city’s water supply problem, and it is reported that it supplied the citizens with 1,000 barrels of water per day. Another attraction of Heraklion in the center is the statue “Eleftherios Venizelos” located in Eleftherias Square in the location “Treis Kamares” and represents the Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos former Prime Minister of Greece. The view from there is magnificent, and you can also see the port of Heraklion.

Finally, after your walk in the city center, you can take a walk in the most commercial streets, for shopping, coffee and for your lunch.
